The HTC One Is Delayed Because Suppliers Think HTC Isn't a Top Tier Company

The HTC One, the beautiful beast of an Android, is delayed because suppliers no longer consider HTC a "tier one company". Which basically means that component companies only care about working with Apple and Samsung. Which basically means that we're going to have to wait a little longer to get our hands on the best Android phone. Which sucks. More »

Attempted prison escape ends in Greece

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Officials say an Albanian inmate who took five people hostage at a Greek prison in an effort to escape has surrendered, ending a 24-hour standoff.

No one was injured on Sunday when Alket Rizaj, a convicted contract killer, gave up.

Officials said his five hostages, all employees at Malandrino prison in central Greece, were released unharmed.

Rizaj is famous for having escaped twice from the maximum-security Korydallos prison in Athens, via helicopters chartered by accomplices, in 2006 and 2009.

He was recaptured both times.

Valve's Joe Ludwig on the uncertain future of virtual reality and partnering with Oculus

Valve's Joe Ludwig on the uncertain future of virtual reality and partnering with Oculus

It's a beautiful late winter day in Bellevue, Wash. Instead of enjoying the outdoors, I'm sitting in a rectangular white room with three programmers, surrounded by three walls covered in augmented reality markers. Not that I'm complaining: Valve Software's Joe Ludwig, the programmer in the room who most resembles a member of Anthrax, is walking me through his company's latest work in the world of virtual reality. It's the first anyone outside of Valve will see of the company's VR efforts thus far.

As it turns out, the software company is working with Oculus VR to port the tremendously popular free-to-play first-person shooter, Team Fortress 2, to the upcoming Rift development kit. The free update, dubbed "VR Mode," is the latest benchmark in Valve's ongoing hardware initiative. "We think that both augmented and virtual reality are going to be a huge deal over the next several years," Ludwig tells us.

(AP) ? The Duchess of Cambridge said Sunday that she doesn't know the sex of her first child ? but she hopes it's a boy.

Her husband Prince William, however, would prefer a girl.

The former Kate Middleton, who is five months pregnant, made the revelation to a soldier at a St. Patrick's Day ceremony honoring the Irish Guards.

?"I asked her 'do you know if it's a girl or boy?' and she said 'not yet,'" said Guardsman Lee Wheeler.

"She said 'I'd like to have a boy and William would like a girl.'"

Wheeler said the duchess told him the couple had not settled on names for the baby, who will be third in line to the British throne.

The duchess wore a green dress coat and a shamrock lapel pin as she presented sprigs of shamrock to soldiers in the annual ceremony at a barracks in Aldershot, southern England. She also pinned a spring on the collar of the regiment's mascot, an Irish wolfhound named Domhnall.

Kate suffered a minor mishap when one of her high heels became briefly stuck in a drainage grille. The duchess leaned on her husband as she wrenched it loose.

The royal St. Patrick's Day tradition was started by Queen Alexandra, the wife of King Edward VII, in 1901.

Insert Coin semifinalist: Smart Knob puts a keypad lock on your door, we go hands-on

Smart Knob hands-on

The Smart Knob promises a smarter, more secure deadbolt lock that lets us issue time-limited unlock codes or give trusted visitors a way in. Thanks to some hands-on time here at Engadget Expand, we've learned that it's even more clever than we thought. The PIN-verified, phone-based code generation system cycles through a seemingly "infinite" range before it hands out a number; someone overstaying their welcome isn't likely to stumble across the new code by accident. And while some might be disappointed that there's no built-in Bluetooth or WiFi to get codes, that actually works to its advantage, according to the project's Clark Li and Merrick Macker. As Smart Knob doesn't need an internet connection, it could be useful even out in the woods.

As for the lock itself? Having had a look first-hand, we're more inclined to believe claims that it's easy to install. At least from what we've seen in the prototype, it really is just a keypad resting on top of the existing deadbolt. There isn't anything special that goes behind or through the door. To us, that makes it easier to justify the $99 price the Smart Knob team is targeting for the base hardware -- it's something you could put on your front door at home, not just at the office. The only added costs would be for ongoing notifications and similar services that would require a more extensive effort. We should know how well the Smart Knob works when it launches closer to the end of the year.
