House rejects payroll-tax deal. Is it now dead?

The House rejected the Senate's temporary payroll-tax deal Tuesday, leaving no clear way out of the impasse. The House wants more discussions, but the Senate says it's done talking.

Forget lines in the sand. Congress is breaking out the shovels.

With Tuesday?s near party-line House vote, the House and Senate are at an impasse over how to continue payroll-tax breaks and other expiring measures ? and there?s no obvious way out.

If Congress fails to act:

  • 160 million Americans will see a payroll tax hike averaging $1,000 for each taxpayer.
  • 2.5 million jobless workers will lose unemployment benefits.
  • Doctors serving Medicare patients will face a 27.4 percent drop in federal reimbursements.

The Senate on Saturday appeared to have settled the issue with a big, bipartisan vote to extend these expiring measures for two months, 89 to 10.?Senators on both sides of the aisle left Washington declaring victory.

Tuesday?s House vote to reject the Senate bill, 229 to 193, revived the impasse. The next step is a conference between House and Senate negotiators to resolve differences between the Senate bill and a House bill the Senate rejected.??

The differences are significant. The House bill extends a pay freeze for all federal workers, cuts unemployment benefits over time from 99 weeks to 54 weeks, reverses an Obama-era rule that bars states from requiring drug tests of jobless applicants, and delays pollution regulations for industrial boilers.

But the Senate has left town and is not scheduled to return until Jan. 23. Moreover, the holidays are a prime time for traveling congressional delegations, especially visits to the troops, meaning they are hard to cut short.

President Obama called on House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio to ?put politics aside,? reverse course, and bring the Senate bill back to the floor for an up-or-down vote.

House GOP leaders did not structure today?s vote as up-or-down on the Senate bill.?Lawmakers had the option to vote ?yes? or ?no? on rejecting the Senate bill and going to conference. They did not have the option of supporting the Senate bill.??

If they had, Democrats would have needed 26 Republicans to break ranks in support of the bill and send it to the Oval Office for the president?s signature.

Michael Jackson's belongings sell for nearly $1M (AP)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? The contents of the home where Michael Jackson lived with his three children before his death in 2009 have sold for nearly $1 million at auction.

The president of Julien's Auctions was still tallying the totals Saturday after the daylong auction, which brought in nearly triple the company's pre-auction estimate of $200,000 to $400,000.

Among the highlights were a chalkboard inscribed with a message from Jackson's children, which sold for $5,000, and an armoire upon which Jackson wrote a message to himself on the mirror, which fetched $18,750.

The headboard from the bed where the pop star died at age 50 was removed from the sale at the family's request, but the rug that was beneath the bed sold for $15,360. The estimate had been $400 to $600.

David Cross calls 'Chipmunks' experience 'awful'

David Cross wants to see "Alvin and the Chipmunks" buried six feet underground.

The actor/comedian recently ended his contract with the film franchise. Now he's put out a contract on the latest installment, "Chipwrecked," in an interview with The Playlist.

"This last film was literally, without question, the most unpleasant experience I've ever had in my professional life," Cross squawked about the follow-up to 2009's "The Squeakquel."

"It's safe to say I won't be working with some of those people ever again. Not the actors," continued Cross, who was contracted to do three "Alvin" movies. "It was just a really awful, unpleasant experience."

Playing record executive Ian Hawke, Cross has been one of the top-billed actors in the three installments of 20th Century Fox's mostly-animated franchise.

Jason Lee plays the other central human character in "Chipwrecked," which opens Friday. Lending their voices to the film are Justin Long, Jesse McCartney, Amy Poehler, Matthew Gray Gubler and Anna Faris.

The movie was directed by Mike Mitchell, for whom Cross saved some less-biting words.

"(He) was great," he said. "We got along. There were a couple of people, though it was just a really awful, unpleasant experience."

While Cross is trying to deep-six "Chip

wrecked," this isn't the first time he's blasted the "Alvin" series.

Following the 2007 release of the first Alvin movie, he feuded with fellow indie comedian Patton Oswalt, who said: "Brian Posehn and I were offered the part of Ian, the agent. We both threw the script across the room in disgust. David Cross caught it."

In defending himself, Cross said the movie had earned him more money than "all my other projects combined," including TV shows like "Mr. Show" and "Arrested Development."

Cross will be reprising his "Arrested Development" role as "never-nude" Tobias Funke when the show makes its expected return in early 2013.

HBT: Cubs said to be favorites to get Fielder

Yesterday there were conflicting reports about the Cubs? interest in Prince Fielder, with Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com saying they were ?stepping up their pursuit? and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe saying they?re ?not major players? for the free agent first baseman.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com chimed in on the situation today, writing that ?the Cubs are the front-runners to sign Fielder? while also cautioning that ?these negotiations might only be in their early stages.?

According to Rosenthal the Mariners appear to be the Cubs? primary competition and he reports that neither the Marlins nor the Rangers will make a play for Fielder. Another option is the Orioles, but Rosenthal views that as unlikely unless Fielder?s other suitors dry up.

For now at least Rosenthal views Fielder as ?the Cubs? player to lose.?

Southern Baptist bookstore recalls pink Bibles (AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The Southern Baptist Convention's bookstores are recalling pink Bibles, saying some of the money raised through their sale was being given to Planned Parenthood.

Lifeway Christian Resources no longer markets the pink-bound version of The Holman Christian Standard Bible and is recalling copies it sold, according to The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/u90K40).

A portion of the purchase price went to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The Komen foundation issued a statement in which it said all proceeds from the Bible sales were going to breast cancer screenings and expressed disappointment in Lifeway's decision.

Lifeway's move came after complaints that some local Komen affiliates were helping fund cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood, which also provides abortions.

The pink Bibles had been in stores since October.
